Matt the ThresherMatt Donovan, known as Matt The Thresher is a famous character in the classic novel ‘Knocknagow, or the Homes of Tipperary’ by Irish writer Charles Kickham (1828-1882). A mild-mannered farmer, Matt reluctantly finds himself in a sledge hammer throwing contest with English Officer, Captain French. Matt throws the hammer so far he breaks all records causing a frenzy amongst the crowd. Having won the battle in Birdhill he says:
