Background

Matt Donovan, known as Matt The Thresher is a famous character in the classic novel ‘Knocknagow, or the Homes of Tipperary’ by Irish writer Charles Kickham (1828-1882). A mild-mannered farmer, Matt reluctantly finds himself in a sledge hammer throwing contest with English Officer, Captain French. Matt throws the hammer so far he breaks all records causing a frenzy amongst the crowd. Having won the battle in Birdhill he says:

"It's for the sake of the little village and for the honour of the old home."

Super friendly and great food too Us four friends met for a meal last week. We booked online and managed to secure a booking. It was very busy when we arrived at 7:15 but we were shown swiftly to our table which was up on the raised level. After being given menus and brought water, we chose starters of soup, pate, squid and all were so tasty. We were offered bread too. For mains, we had chicken, fish and chips and noodles with prawns. Only one person had room for dessert which looked and tasted great. We had a couple of drinks and one designated driver who stuck with the water and the total bill was €173 which was fair considering the excellent service and food served. Even though the restaurant was very busy with various sized groups, they were very well staffed. Many thanks for the great hospitality ????

Nice way to discover Dublin via food A friend of mine from Dublin recommend me this restaurant if I look for a real Irish experience, with good food, and restaurant ( not pub) experience. We booked the restaurant online, we arrived and our table was ready. Friendly staff, good recommandations, we tried fish and chips - I know, so classic. The food was just great, well prepared , and the price was perfectly aligned with the expectation. The place is nice. Cozy , you feel like eating at home. Was a great experience, and I will go back for sure.

Great Bar and Restaurant I have a list of several bars and restaurants that I must go to when I am in Dublin and Matt the Thresher is top of my list. Again I met up with three Irish friends and enjoyed an excellent meal and wine. It remains top of my list.
